Barcarolle has been newly designed as a continuation of the series following Cachalot.
The shared light source inherited across the series does not dazzle even when directly viewed, yet it emits a warm glow that almost feels tangible, as if carrying a sense of temperature. While the previous work took inspiration from the vitality found in nature, Barcarolle draws from elements shaped by human life and culture throughout history. Beautiful, old European street lamps, historical churches and facilities, and the details of stairs and columns within them—by reinterpreting the decorative qualities of these elements, a form of portable lamp has emerged where eras and timelines dissolve, and classic and modern harmonize as one.
Through advanced craftsmanship, the delicate details of each finely made metal component and the glass shade that casts silhouettes of light into space evoke a quiet presence and a warm glow, much like the serene atmosphere of still-life paintings from the Middle Ages. They become a comforting accent of light for contemporary living.
When multiple Barcarolle are placed together, they create an emotional scene within a space—like the shimmering city lights reflected on the surface of the sea or canals of Venice at dusk.

Meet The Designer
Hiroto Yoshizoe
In recent years he has collaborated with manufacturers and fashion brands and has commenced presenting his individual design projects. Hiroto won the Grand Prix of LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2017, and was also selected as one of the emerging young designers “dwell24” by the American design magazine Dwell in 2018. In the past five years, he has shown his work in numerous countries such as Japan, Italy, America, and Brazil, and in 2020 he presented a large-scale installation in Shanghai, China. Hiroto is also a part-time lecturer at Kyoto University of the Arts.

The Japanese light design company was founded in 2009. Founder and CEO Yoshinori Kuno had previously created AOI Japan Co., Ltd. in 1999, specializing in the production of protective underwater cases for professional photography equipment.
